A broken spring is the single most common garage door failure, and the most dangerous one to attempt yourself. The spring, not the opener, carries the weight of the door. When it breaks, the opener is suddenly asked to lift two hundred pounds it was never built to lift.
Signs you need this

Torsion springs and extension springs
Torsion springs mount on a bar above the door opening and unwind as the door rises. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch instead. Torsion is the more common setup on newer Las Vegas homes and the more forgiving of the two when it fails, because the spring stays on the bar rather than becoming a projectile.
Why springs are not a do it yourself repair
A torsion spring holds several hundred pounds of stored energy even when the door is down. Winding one requires the correct bars and a technique that does not forgive a slip. Emergency room visits from spring work are common enough that manufacturers print warnings directly on the spring. This is the repair to hand over.
Replace in pairs
When one spring on a two spring door breaks, the second is the same age and has taken the same cycles. Replacing only the broken one means paying for the same call twice, usually within a year. We will always quote the pair and let you decide.

Common questions
How long do garage door springs last?
Springs are rated in cycles, not years. A standard spring is rated around 10,000 cycles, which is roughly seven to ten years for a household that opens the door twice a day. A family that comes and goes six times a day will reach the same number in under four years.
Can I still use the door with a broken spring?
No. Do not run the opener and do not try to lift it by hand. With the spring gone the door is unbalanced dead weight, and forcing it can bend panels, snap cables or drop the door.
Do you replace both springs?
We recommend it and we will quote it that way, because the surviving spring has the same age and cycle count as the one that failed. The choice is yours.
